Meet the Made in H&F Makers

Michelle Abbey runs Kings Mall’s locals pop up, Made in Hammersmith and Fulham (Made in H&F). With a background in Consulting and Art Curating and passion for community engagement, Michelle has taken this project under her wing.

Made in H&F boutique is a collectively supported by the BID, council and Kings Mall and sells art, jewellery, home accessories, gifts, bags, scarves, urban wear, upcycled furniture, cards, millinery and lots more. All items in store are sourced from local artists and makers – the one requirement being that they must be or live in the local area.

We had a sit down with Michelle, and three of the creators Leon, Cookiie and Yana to get some autumn inspiration…

For those who don’t know, could you sum up Made in H&F?

Michelle: It’s a concept, not a shop. Replicating a model that is very common across central European countries, this shop is not about buying and selling, but about diversity in art. We are shining light on talented H&F artists and makers whilst allowing locals to come in and feel part of a community.

Artists, please tell us what you do!

Leon: I own Pureté Nature, a brand of wellbeing products. I sell hair and skin products, as well as sprays, herbs and candles.
Cookiie: I started launched my own hat brand – Precious Matare. All my hats are one of a kind, statement pieces.
Yana: I am an oil painter. I mainly make commissioned pieces.

What made you start your business?

Yana: I paint with the intention of bringing positive energy to people. Sometimes when I paint, I get so happy but exhausted – I try to transfer my own energy into each piece that I create.
Leon: I grew frustrated by the lack of natural products on the market and lack of education on this. People have left ancient products behind that are perfectly useful but for some reason forgotten – I want to bring back the old school.

If you had a chance to give yourself advice when you were starting out, what would it be?

Leon: Go for it! You don’t know what’s going to happen until you start. I found myself wondering if people would like my products but… you cannot answer that question yourself, you have to let the people answer!
Cookiie:I would tell myself to just start. When I tried to explain what my ideas were to family and friends, they did not get it. The best thing to do is believe in yourself, and when you are successful, people will get on board!
Michelle:Age is just a number – make a start, it doesn’t matter how old you are.

Any last comments?

Leon: Build confidence in everyone around you. Always aspire to inspire!
Michelle: Treat all your customers like rockstars!

You can shop locally at the Made in H&F pop up in Kings Mall until the end of the year!
